Learn to Fly R/C Airplanes

Today was a beautiful day to learn how to fly model airplanes. Pictured above left to right is 15 yr old Blake and training him is field fight instructor BL Prosser. Blake learned how to fly on a Hobbico 40 size trainer. This is Blake’s first time flying R/C Airplanes. We spoke to Blake after his flight. He said it wasn’t as easy has he thought it would be. “It sure isn’t a toy, but it sure was a lot of FUN!” Thanks Blake glad to have you out. Come join us and learn how to fly in beautiful Statesboro GA. Learn to fly R/C Airplanes is very easy and fun.

Tuning R/C Engines

Tuning the engine by Needle valve . This is the most important part a pilot should know, setting the engine's high-speed needle valve. When the needle valve is backed-off (rich) 100 to 200 rpm from its peak setting, the max cylinder pressure will find the mark that is if all the other procedures are done correctly. To start set the needle valve a way to lean and the combustion temperature will rise, causing the ignition point timing to increase. Overheating, possible combustion effect, and a missed magic spot are the consequences.

Cooling. All air-cooled glow engines are also practically liquid cooled. Vaporizing fuel in the crankcase and combustion chamber actually helps keeps engine temperature within range. A very rich needle valve setting promises that the engine will run cool when burning of fuel. However, when the needle valve is optimized for performance, airflow through the cooling fins is needed. If the temperature climbs to high, ignition and burning begins. If the c head temperature is too low, which often happens in winter conditions, ignition and burning starts later causing erratic combustion and wear and tear in certain engines.

Propeller. Be sure to test different props with the engine. Props to big will cause over load on the engine and the engine will perform less rpm causing poor performance.
Increasing the propeller size will advances the ignition point timing and decreasing propeller size restrains the ignition point timing. When an engine is close to its magic spot, year round pilots experiment with multiple changes in propeller diameter.

Glow plug heat . Glow plugs have two jobs, get the engine started and keep it running. It is lit by a low voltage igniter ,a high temperature orange glow is visible, this allows the engine to be started. After starting, the glow plug igniter is removed and the plug is still lit by the recommend glow fuel.

Rc Jet Planes!!!

These RC Jets are Cool!! I got to get one in my hanger!

Lanier Laser 200

Lanier Laser's 1st Flight took place at the beautiful fiying site in Statesboro GA,with r/c pilot Mike Petrea. The Lanier Laser flew great with no issues and no trim need to keep level flight. Weather conditions where a bit windy and overcast, but always great flying!

Lanier Laser 200, designed by Bob Godfrey, The plane is a 1/3 scale model of Leo Loudenslager's world champion aerobatic airplane. This giant model is an affordable kit and you need a butt load of room for building and storing. You may need a truck or trailer for transporting the model. Some advantages are maintenance-free gas burning engines made for the Laser. This same model has been used by well known R/C Pilots such as Chip Hyde in Top Gun competition. It will fly and land amazingly slowly, loves to fly in the wind, yet when the throttle was increased it will perform any stunt in the book.
